Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.Oscar Wilde
In junior high I remember having a teacher that I didn’t see eye to eye with. I told my mother about this hoping she could do something about some disagreement. She told me, “this will be a good life lesson, as you will run across many people you disagree with.” That is not what I wanted to hear. I wanted someone to fix the situation right away. A few years later I was playing sports for a coach that I didn’t think was doing things right and I let my mother know about it. She again used this same refrain with me.
My first job out of college was as a sales representative for a business products firm. I had to cold call for a few months to find some business which I found a little. I did get few accounts from my manager, one had quite an interesting person to deal with. He was an irascible old purchasing agent that was very intimidating for me to meet with. I could hear my mother in my head, and I though to myself I have some experience with people like this. My sales career didn’t take off like I hoped but I learned quite a bit.
We all have a lot more experience than we sometimes give ourselves credit for. If we take a second we when get upset that things are going exactly as we would like, we might have some similar experience. A few years ago I was offered a management position with a new company, at first I had some self doubt that I had no experience and that I could never do that. Of course I forgot I was Vice President of Student Council, Captain of the Football team, and District officer in FFA. We must also remember that even the great ones had to start somewhere. You don’t start at the top you get some experience along the way.
