You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.
Recently I had the chance to see a good friend Danny Beyer speak on networking as part of DMACC West Campus Celebrate Innovation week. Danny and I met in the West Des Moines Leadership Academy a few years ago. His speech was entitled “Great Networking – It’s Easier than You Think”. He started out by pointing out that we are always networking no matter where we are at. When we talk with people we are building our network and enhancing connections or building new ones. So he said we should be conscious of that fact.
We need to let our goals and desires be known to our network. This is the only way they can help you is if you let them know. This was kind of an interesting point as Danny mentioned this to me when I asked him, “How can I get started in speaking?” I did ask my network and I did get a few responses about potential opportunities for speaking.
Danny reminded us that we must ask others in our network, “How can I help you?” He said we must be genuine when we say this. People will remember if we say these things and don’t back them up. “Do what you said you would” is crucial to building your network. This is what I believe Zig Ziglar meant with his quote, “You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.”
Danny spoke on how we can all enhance our personal network through social media. We can build our online profiles as an extension of ourselves. LinkedIn is a very important place for professionals to be. Danny instructed the group that if they do one thing after listening to him speak it was to “create a LinkedIn profile.” I would agree with that 100%, this is a great way to showcase our talents and special skills.
I enjoyed seeing Danny speak and I look forward to watching his speaking career take off!
