This week I had the opportunity to go to the local Java users group. As a Java developer I always enjoy checking out what people are talking about. Central Iowa Java Users Group or CIJUG as many locals call it has been around for quite a while. Zach Cox of Pongr spoke first about Metrics. He went over the basics of the Metrics API. He went through the examples of some major pieces of the API and where you can use these. He covered Gauges, Counters, Meters, Histograms, and Timers.
Kevin Nuckolls spoke next about LogStash. Kevin has bright red hair and an energetic personality. This all came through over the Google Hangout he joined us on. He walked us through what are the major benefits of using LogStash and how we can use it to search logs. At Dice we have started using Splunk. I would like to do more comparison between the two.
The last speaker was Rich Harms of Right Stuf. Rich spoke about the VisualVM and how we can use it to see into the Heap. Rich took two heap dumps and used VisualVM to compare the changes in them. I have to say I learned a lot from Rich’s presentation. He went into great detail about the levels of memory in the VM. I remember many times where I could have used this tool!
Have you ever used these?
