“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.”

T.S. Eliot

Many of us dream of a second career that is more rewarding and enjoyable. Working as a career coach I have helped people realize the many options in Information Technology. I have worked with people who have been laid off from a factory job who thought they could never make as much money as they did there. Only to find that they could make more and enjoy their life more in Information Technology

Abundant Choices

I am constantly amazed at the people who think IT is just developers and help desk. Teaching a community education class for Des Moines Community Education on Information Technology careers, I see many people who did not understand the breadth of the career paths.

Great Pay

IT Careers rank among the highest paid industry, especially when you compare the amount of education. To get paid more you would have to go to professional school to be a doctor or lawyer. If you are considering a career in IT look at the pay and options.

Numerous Job Opportunities

Depending on where you look there are quite a few options open. One of my former employers was Dice.com and they currently have 86,258 jobs open. So no matter where you live there is a good job nearby.

Some Remote options

If you want to live in a remote area or travel and work at the same time it is possible in IT. In my recently published book Cracking the Career Code I profile a friend of mine who travels the world and works as an Software Developer. All he needs to do his work is and internet connection.

Short training window

Another important aspect I share with many career changers is that to get into IT you can do so in a short time. For instance some jobs might require a few classes and taking a certification test. If you have a short time frame to make a transition consider IT. Most community colleges have quite a few options to help you out.

Room to grow

Many IT jobs have great opportunities for advancement. From growing into senior technical roles to moving into management their are options for moving up and developing great careers. Where many other careers stall out IT careers give you options to move up the ladder.
