Last week I had the opportunity to present to Unemployed in Des Moines a presentation entitled, “Is IT for me?” We discussed the many career opportunities in Information Technology. We had a lot of great discussion around these many career paths and how someone can get moving on a career transition.
The first part of the presentation discussed the Career Match and what a big choice this is. We spoke about taking a skill inventory spanning your entire career and looking for areas of competency. In any job you have had you probably learned a few things you enjoyed and some you would like not to do again. One way to help people understand their strengths is through some type of personality profile, like Strength Finders 2.0.
Then we began to discuss some of the Information Technology careers.
- Business Analyst
- Project Manager
- Quality Assurance
- Quality Engineer
- Agile Development Roles
- Database Administrator
- Information Security Analyst
- Network Engineer/Administrator
- Help Desk Technician
From there we looked at how we can put a career transition plan together for you. The options for training keep growing with the changes of technology. A long time ago the only option was go and sit in a classroom. Now we have many options we can learn from practically anywhere.
Do you know an organization that would benefit from this presentation, please contact me.
