Combating the Eeyore Factor

As a child one some of my favorite stories were about Winnie the Pooh.  I enjoyed the tales of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet and Christopher Robin.  Tigger is the bouncy fun loving tiger.  Eeyore is the donkey who is always having a bad day.  In Dan Miller’s book No More Dreaded Mondays he talks about how we must combat the Eeyore factor.  We run into these people in many situations that have a multitude of problems.  Some people call them “Debbie Downers” or “Negative Nancy’s”, they are hard to be around.  They can sometimes zap you of your positive energy.  Here is Dan’s suggestions to combat this:

1. When obstacles appear, don’t assume “everyone hates me.”  Rather, see these challenges as opportunities to grow and succeed in new ways.  Without challenges, you will never improve.

2. Remember a time in your life when a seeming disaster opened the door to something good.

3. If you lose your job, expect that now you’ll find your dream job with better pay.

4. Stop thinking of your morning wake up call as an alarm clock.  Start reaching out for what the motivational speaker Zig Ziglar calls the “opportunity clock”!

Now you have some suggestions to help you stop yourself from suffering from the Eeyore factor.  Make sure you know when you are being negative yourself.  We all have issues throughout the course of our day, depending how we interpret them could send us into an “Eeyore state”.  So be ready as your day develops.
